Does anyone know how to at least open a .mxd file using ESRI's Arcengine

I've been having no luck even opening a file using ESRI's ArcGIS engine to open a file in a anyway that is useful.  The .mxd files I guess use a proprietary format for saving their data.  I am using the developer's .NET kit from the company but have had little success figuring out even what object classes I should be using when trying to pull data from a map file.  If anybody has any experience, some helpful tips would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt that you'll find a better source of information than ArcGIS Resource Center, but they don't seem to have many quick and dirty examples. A google search brings up a few more forums, but I haven't heard of anybody using it with LabVIEW. I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with.
