Hello,

I have heard of this error occuring during installations, when a registry key cannot be accessed (as the error message notes).  The first thing to check I think is that the key indicated in the error message actually exists in your registry.  Just click Start -> Run... and type regedit to open the registry.  Then navigate to the key indicated to verify it exists.  If it does exist, can you double click to attempt to edit it?  Do you receive any errors?  I don't recommend actually changing anything, rather to test if perhaps you don't have registry editing rights for some reason (although logging in as an administrator I think should be sufficient).

Another idea, which has solved strange problems usually related to a specific computer and perhaps a virus scanner installed, is to copy the contents of the install cd to your hardrive, and attempt to install from there.

Give those "tests" a try, and let me know how it goes.  The results should give us some more information with which to explore other potential solutions.

Hello JLS,

We verified that the said registry key exists. However, we do not have access to the key even in administrative login; which is something we are unable to explain.

We also tried installing from a dump of the installer on our HDD. Same error.

Let me know if any other info is required to help you arrive at possible asnwers.

Thanks,
Gurdas

hi there

the installer complains that he has no privileges to acces the key, and you can confirm that by just editing the key in the registry. so i'd say it's a windows problem. is this the only key or are there more you can't edit? try to install another app and then check if you can edit the keys.

to be honest, i would feel a little bit uncomfortable when i wouldn't be allowed to acces the registry as an administrator. i'd try some registry cleaners or virus scanners.

Best regards

Hello,

I agree, and that's a great suggestion about trying another application.  Also, can you try installing on another machine?  Perhaps there is one you could try that isn't on the same network (and therefore no administered the same way).  If you know the person who set up the original account on the machine, perhaps you can talk to them about any special configuration they may have set up.

Best regards and best of luck!

Hi,

Gurdas is my colleague and we have jointly looked at the problem.

I wanted to add some points to the problem description. This error occurs only on LabVIEW Application Builder installation. Any other NI or non NI application installation is flawless.

Additionally, under registry entries for LabVIEW, there are many more registry keys that remain inaccessible even under Administrator login, or any other login with administrator priviliges on the same machine. This happens only for NI software.

Also, the machine has WinXP with Service Pack 2 plus regular microsoft Windows Updates.

It'd be really great if there were any clues to solving this problem.

I would agree with Chris and JLS. If you can't modify those keys even as administrator there is something very strange happening with your copy of Windows. The suggestion to use a registry cleaner is a very good one. Also, if you can find the person who setup the original account that would be helpful as well. You may also try doing a repair on Windows or restoring your system to an earlier date. In the end, if you don't have access to the registry key then neither does the installer. Best of luck.

hi there

have there been any changes with the users privileges or user names on your local network since you have installed LabVIEW? i mean there are several kinds of administrators, local, domain, users with administrator privileges... maybe there are more than one user named "administrator" on your network.

Best regards
chris

I guess, based on the feedback available, we'd need a Windows reinstall. It's a desktop machine with Winddows XP Professional + Service Pack 2. So hardly anything at the network level or for that matter on admin rights. Would update once we have more details.

Thanks,
