Error 8 when accessing software written in LabView from a limited user account

Our company's software is written in LabView. Recently a customer has received Error 8 when trying to access our software from a limited user account on their network. They are able to access the software from a desktop using the limited account, but get the error when trying to access the software from a laptop on the network. The network has recently been set up, and the software worked properly from one of the laptops when it was not connected to the network. The problem seems to be a permission issue, although the customer has installed the software in the limited account as an administrator.

Below is the message the customer sent me explaining the steps they have taken to correct the problem. How can the problem be corrected?

Original Message:

Ok. I have tried to install from the limited account. The installer will allow me to try, but then gives an error message saying that it does not have write permission. I then install as administrator from the limited account, and it installs fine. However, I still cannot run it from the limited account. Must have administrative permissions to run.

Now, there is a complication involved. We tried this on another machine -- a desktop in the lab. It installs fine from the administrative account and runs from the limited account.

The problem occurs on a laptop. We have had it running on these laptops for three years without a problem. But we have 16 of them and thought that the best way to prepare for the fall was to make a ghost image of a good setup and then install it on all of the laptops (using Symantec ghost image software). I erased the disk and install everything from scratch, including the SI software. I demonstrated that the software would run from the administrative account, but am not sure that I did from the limited account. We then made a ghost image and installed the ghost on the same machine. It will now not run.

I have used the uninstall to remove the software and removed the Labview software as well. I have then reinstalled, but with the same results.

I have tried to place SI 400 software in the shared document directory -- but have the same results.

Here is the error message I am getting:

Error 8 occurred at in Read Configuration File for SI 400
4.vi->! SI 400 Series Spectrometer

Possible reasons:
LabView: File permission error.
or
NI-488: DMA hardware error detected.

The fact that things work in the administrative account makes me believe it is a permission error.

Hi dwalter,

I'm curious about why the Error 8 is occurring in the Read Configuration File for SI 400 4.vi when your machine is connected to the network.

Are all the subVIs for the main VI placed on the actual machine or are some of them linked through the network? Maybe the access to the subVIs is strictly limited to some accounts such as Administrators.

In general, I would always recommend running your application as an Administrator, but please let me know what you find, so we can troubleshoot further, thanks.

Good luck!

The solution was to give full access to the files causing the errors as opposed to having the accessing account limited.
