How do I change the cursor in the block diagram?

I see a hand with a raised index finger instead of the arrow pointer. How did this happen?

With automatic tool selection on, the cursor will change to that when you are over an object that you can change the value - i.e. an enum. If you turned automatic tool selection off, then clicking on the tab key will cycle through Operate (the finger). Select (the arrow), text, and the wire tool.

You can click the button on the top of the tool palette to turn auto on or off. If auto is off, a shift tab will turn it back on. Open the on-line help and open the Tools>Selecting topic for more details.

Thank you again! I found the help and read through it and will think about what you and the help says. I'll check in with the NI rep tomorrow morning but I can keep going for now. Your assistance is most appreciated!

Another option is to go to Tools/ Options and locate the "Lock automatic tool selection on" then deselect the checkbox, this prevents Labview from starting up with the default set to on - I use this all the time as I have never got used to the auto tool selection, in use I toggle the different modes using the space bar - Mike

I dont think you can toggle/switch between different modes using the Space bar, you can do so only between the Select & Label tools.
