How to build a simple application using DataSocket in LabVIEW 6.1?

I would like to have A complete description/explanation of DataSocket Technology in LabVIEW 6.1. Also, a simple example of of writer and reader (simpler than the ones in Example directory).

The simplest way using data socket is:
open a front panel
put a control or indicator on it
from the context menu use Data operations>>DataSocket Connection...
Fill out the dialog and you will be able to get or set data in the data socket server.

The following is a simple tutorial about DataSocket: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/2d17d611efb58b22862567a9006ffe76/14f3b2bc11811dc186256a9d0068b2d1?OpenDocument

I will attach a very simple datasocket example writer and reader. Make sure to start the datasocket server before running these examples.

On the datasocket reader, just make sure the front panel object is inside a while loop. Otherwise, you wont get a continuous update.

NKS:

You seem to have gotten a lot of good advice here. One thing that can be a mystery. If you try to actually open the file 'dstp://host/123.dat" for example, you will find it doesn't exist! DSTP files are virtual files, continuously created and deleted in real time. Don't let that worry you. The Datasocket server takes care of all of that very nicely and transparently. Be sure if you're on a LAN that you rename the HOST server appropriately...otherwise the default "localhost" can confuse things.
