How to change image contrast with out using IMAQ functions?

I need to change the contrast and brightness for an image with out using IMAQ functions. How is it possible?

If it is an RGB image, you would just split it into the RGB components and scale each one before reassembling them back. If it is a colormapped image, you can transform the colormap entries. Same for greyscale.
