How to set up ETS

I'm trying to use ETS on a Dell GX240, and have followed the "Requirements for a Desktop PC as a LabVIEW Real-Time Target" document (except for not having an Intel NIC yet).

When I boot from a PXI floppy boot disk, I see a Kernel error 146040: NoWaitHost specified, but no application present - ETS Monitor halting with error code 2.

Apparently, the other ETS document has been taken offline for updates.

Any suggestions?

I don't know if that particular error is a result of not having the correct Intel NIC, but I do know that you absolutely must have the correct NIC in order to boot.

JTP,

There are a couple of reasons why you should use the floppys provided when you purchase the deployment license for desktops.

1. The PXI boot floppy may not work for your desktop, even if you have one of the listed Intel NICs.

2. For each desktop that you deploy LVRT to, you need a license, otherwise you're in violation of the license agreement.

Please post again if you have any questions.

Gerardo

We are also having problems booting up ETS on a target PC (Dell Precision 650 Workstation). In our case, at the moment the PC does not have an acquisition card. When we boot with a PXI boot disk (as indicated by the "Using Desktop PCs as RT Targets" doc), we get the following message:

"ETS loading...............
transfering control to user program
labview Real time boot loader
-----
searching hard disk for boot program ... not found
using safe mode program on floppy disk"

We then see a rapid list of error messages, such as

"system error kernel 446610 LFS error not a dos disk pc-dskinit"

And then the machine reboots.

In any event, we *did not* receive any boot floppys with the RT module.

Any suggestions appreciated.

NI can provide you with an exe via the net so that you can make your floppies locally. Let me know if you need more info on this and I'll check my machine so I can give you a description of the files.

Well, it does seem that a special boot floppy is needed for the PC installation of ETS. *However*, when we bought the RT ETS module in December, there was no indication that these floppies were necessary (web pages such as "Requirements for a Desktop PC as a LabVIEW Real-Time Target" only referred to making a boot floppy with MAX, although as of *today* at least the web site makes the PC boot floppy requirement clear). More irritating, there was no indication that you have to pay >600euros for the PC boot floppy on top of the price for the RT module! Needless to say, the sales representative here said nothing about needing the PC boot floppy.

So, if it is possible I would very much like to know what I have to do so that "NI can provide you with an exe via the net so that you can make your floppies locally".

Is someone from NI listening to this thread?

Thanks,
Lyle

What I did to get the exes was just call and ask. The applications engineer I spoke to dug me them up somewhere and sent them to me in a zip file. Of course, I have a license for the ETS on a desktop thing.

Just ask if you can use any further clarification from me.

I think that I did not appreciate the distinction between "LabVIEW Real-Time Module (ETS) for Windows" and "LabVIEW Real-Time Deployment License for Standard PC's- ETS RTOS", that is, I assumed that when you bought a 2000euro product, it was complete. It seems that I need to buy the license as well. Oh well, that's a couple of weeks wasted...

As far as I know all modules (not only Real-Time) need a deployment license. The misunderstanding is that the following hardware is purchaesed with the Real-Time deployment license included:
Plug-in boards, (Compact)Field Point, Compact Vision and PXI RT Controllers. All other hardware need the Real-Time deployment license extra. This is even true for PXI Controller ordered with Windows or the dual boot option.

Well, this policy is not very transparent to me. In addition, if one looks at other modules, for example "NI LabVIEW FPGA Module", "LabVIEW Vision Development Module" and "LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control Module, Run-Time System", there is no reference to any "deployment license" product. In fact, the prices and spec page for "LabVIEW Real-Time Module" (which lists the " LabVIEW Real-Time Module (ETS) for Windows") also does not mention a license! It is only when you find the same module listed in the "Dedicated Real-Time Target" page that you see the mention of the "LabVIEW Real-Time Deployment License for Standard PC's- ETS RTOS" (as mentioned, this reference seems to have been added just recently).

On the other hand, the "LabVIEW PDA Module" seems to need (but this is not obvious) "Deployments", which I suppose are also "licenses".

Clear as mud.
