Dear KKnowles,
The required components for setting up a Smart Camera to work with LabVIEW are:
Usually all of the above ship out to customers on CD (or DVD as of 8.6). The Vision Acquisition Software can also be downloaded from ni.com here.
You can find detailed instructions for installing all the necessary software to acquire images with the Smart Camera through LabVIEW here:
Getting Started with the NI 17xx Smart Camera
https://www.ni.com/docs/en-US/bundle/372351d/resource/372351d.pdf
Please make sure that you have followed these instructions to install the necessary software, setup the camera, and verify operation and software in MAX (Measurement & Automation Explorer).
Hope this helps!

I had to go through our IT department to have them install the software. He says he has installed everything in the instructions, but when we get to the step 3 on page 14 (Select LabVIEW Real-Time, NI Vision RT, NI-IMAQ RT, NI-IMAQ Server) there is no NI-IMAQ RT option. When we move on to the next step ignoring adding the NI-IMAQ RT software, we aren't able to access ch0 to acquire an image.
I was wondering if the NI-IMAQ RT software is what is preventing us from acquiring an image or if there is a different step we are missing. We do not have administrative rights and our IT department is wanting us to confirm that we are not missing any software that needs to be installed.
Thanks,
Kevin

Dear Kevin,
NI-IMAQ RT should be installed with the IMAQ driver (included in Vision Acquisition Software). One thing to check is to make sure that you have LabVIEW Real-Time Support installed from the installation options for NI-IMAQ. You can check this from the add/remove programs list in windows»National Instruments Software»NI IMAQ and select "modify". This should bring up the dialog box where you will encounter installed components of the driver. Make sure that LabVIEW Real-Time Support for your version of LabVIEW is checked.
Please let me know if this doesn't make NI-IMAQ RT show up. If not, what version of Vision Acquisition Software and LabVIEW RT are you using?
Best Regards,
~Nate

That fixed my problem with the Smart Camera. We have an old webcam that connects using USB. Do we need to just add support in the same way? I'm assuming there is just NI-IMAQ USB support that needs to be added for 8.5.
Thanks,
kknowles

Dear kknowles,
The webcam is a totally different story. USB cameras connect through Windows Direct Show, and do not use any of our standard IMAQ drivers. We do have an IMAQ for USB driver available for download from ni.com, which allows users to configure any DirectShow imaging device and acquire images in LabVIEW:
*Note that your camera will not show up in MAX (Measurement & Automation Explorer) with the IMAQ for USB camera driver.
Best Regards,
~Nate
