It's a bit crazy (checking all possibilities) but I think it'll work out. The best thing would obviously be to pass the ImageControl to the SubVI instead of the whole Pane.
I still don't understand why this is not possible. Does anyone have an explanation? I mean, is there no one of the development team here who could close this big blank gap in the next version?
