Installing Lab View FPGA Error

Hello,

I am attempting to install Lab view FPGA Version 8.5.1 on my desktop PC (Windows XP SP 3) and I receive the following error message

'The NI LabVIEW 8.5.1 FPGA Compile Server installation has failed'

I get no details as to the cause of the failure and searching the NI website reveals no clues !

The current NI software installed on my PC is as detailed in the MAX screenshot (see attachment)

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi tb10000,

I understand you're having issues installing NI FPGA 8.5.1.  The 8.5.1 version isn't officially supported in XP SP3 (only SP1 and SP2).  You will find information on supported platforms in the Readme file that came with the CD or download containing the add-on module or here.

There are, however, a few things we can try:

Firstly, can I ask you to check that you have TCP installed (I can't think of a reason that it wouldn't be.  If you are/have ever been connected to a network on your desktop PC, then it will be installed).  The LabVIEW FPGA Module communicates with the LabVIEW FPGA Compile Server through TCP.  If TCP is not installed, LabVIEW returns the Error Contacting Server message.

Secondly, the FPGA Module must be installed before the Real-Time Module if you have that installed.  (I can't tell from the screenshot as it would be listed under LabVIEW).  If you already have the Real-Time Module installed, you should uninstall it and then install the FPGA Module.  You can then reinstall the Real-Time Module.

Thirdly, I would suggest that you make sure all of your NI software is not running when you try to install a new module.  You can open task manager to check to see if anything is still running.  Programs may still be running after you have closed them due to hard drive I/O queues (normally this will show up as svchost.exe having a large memory or CPU usage).  You can also use Performance Monitor to check for disk or network activity from NI software.

Finally, can you confirm what version of LabVIEW you are using?  To make use of the FPGA 8.5.1 Module, you must be running LabVIEW 8.5 Full or Professional Development System (Base is not supported).

Hello Oli, thank you for your reply.

The FPGA module is installed on our target test systems which hosts Windows XP SP 3 and so I do not suspect that the SP3 is causing the problem.

TCP is installed.

The Real Time module has not been installed.

Yes I have ensured no other software (inc NI) is not running.

The Lab View version is 8.5.1

I have spoken to Dan Vickers at NI in the last 24 hours in order to resolve this problem. It transpires that one of the causes of this error is if the Lab View Runtime Engine isn't installed. It appears, from MAX, that I have no Lab View runtime engines installed however when I go to Add/Remove programs it shows that I have Lab View 10, 7.1.1, 7.0 and 6.1 installed !!

I have subsequently removed the Lab View 10 variant and tried to install Lab View runtime 8.5.1. however when I run the installer it does not give me the option to install it, only repair, modify or remove! Why this is I do not know as my system does not flag it as being installed. I have subsequently tried the repair and remove option but then  I get another non-descript error message saying the task failed.

It appears my only option is to un-install ALL the NI software...if it allows me to, and start afresh. At this juncture it was decided to pass the task I was set to do to another engineer (who already has the FPGA installed) as this has already cost us a lot of time and money.

Thank you for you suggestions.

Hello again,

Thank you for your reply.

I've just spoken to Dan, who has filled me in on the situation.

As I understand it, you are going to try to get the installer working on your PC at a later date.

Feel free to contact Dan or Myself at a later date should you require any more assistance.

Kind Regards,
