What is the make and model of the device you are trying to communicate with using Modbus?

The issue has been resolved.
Changing the mode on both ends from ASCII to RTU solved the problem.

I swear I mentioned that...

Have you tried serial type RTU?

Anyway I'm no Modbus expert but to be honest I have never seen a Modbus device that used ASCII mode.

Yes, you mentioned it earlier, but the device manual explicitly states that "Modbus serial RTU and ASCII are supported." That's why I decided to try using ASCII. However, I still can't figure out why ASCII isn't working while RTU works perfectly fine.
