LV 8.2 Generic file I/O error

Nope, I am using 8.5 over a local network and it fails around 15 - 20 times on saves.

My little finger tells me that an update (8.5.1 ?) should correct this in a matter of weeks.

Side note : when the file generic IO error occur, do a "save as", select "rename" and it works. Doing this avoid you to have to try to save 20 times 😉
I have no tip for when you save multiple VIs... Smiley Sad

Hi pgaastra,

You would need to have LabVIEW 8.2.1 to be able to apply the patch. If the issue is causing too much trouble, I would suggest you contact your NI Sales Reprentative at http://www.ni.com/contact/ for more information in obtaining LabVIEW 8.2.1.

Hi,

I got sick of the Generic file I/O error so I installed the patch you mention.  However the first time I tried to save a modified file I still have the dreaded Generic file I/O error.

Any special tricks on the patch install?

Hey pgaastra,

I'm sure you read the install file, but in case you didn't, its not like a normal install routine. You have to manually copy the files to appropriate directories after they are unzipped in the temporary directory.

Its all in the readme_LV821f4.txt file that unpacked with the download.

Maybe you did that and are having trouble anyway, in which case, someone else will have to step in here, I haven't had any problems sine intalling the patch.

Oops.

I read the readme and did the mods to the labview.ini file but the lines to add had speech marks round them.  I put the speech marks into the ini file.  I've taken them out and so far so good, it saves OK.

Anyone heard anything on this issue?

Its kinda dragging on a little is it not?

What about the open NI Job, did it never get resolved?

I've never installed 8.5, so I don't know if they patched that yet or not. Is that what you are referring to? I'm not sure there was ever an open ticket on this problem in 8.5. Looking back over the thread, I see you are irrevocably running 8.5.

Last I heard this was still a bug on 8.5., no patches. Seems kind of lame. I'm definitely holding off on installing 8.5.

I vaguely remember a ticket being rasied for 8.5.......but it could have been 8.2.

Its a a wee bitty to late for us as we are already running 8.5 & as far as I am aware there is no turning back!
Usually when an update for a product comes to market I install it straight away, I have the feeling I will be holding off in the future Smiley Sad

Just want to be able to save without multiple attempts and have faith that what I have done hase saved.

Hi,

LabVIEW V 8.5.1 is available for download and in the bug fix list I see under Miscellaneous:

42G7H7O5  File I/O error: cannot save NameOfVI.vi

No mention of "Generic" but from previous postings to this thread I see the CAR? number 42G7H705 is the number relating to this thread.  So it looks like it is solved.

P.S. I was wondering why not many people were worried about this bug.  I have been reading a few post to the LabVIEW list and see that many people seem to have problems with their IT departments.  One solution someone had was that they were allowed LabVIEW if their computer was not connected to the network.  Maybe the majority of LabVIEW users store all their stuff on their local hard drive.
