LV2012 into OpenOffice Base?

Just reading just a bit of the "documentation", you are going to find that this is going to be a handful.

I can better understand the confusion now. ADO is the name of the technology from microsoft to provide a standard interface to databases. Access is not a database. Openoffice is not a database. They are front ends to actual database engines. The name of the Access engine is Jet. From what I understand, OpenOffice.can be configured to use different engines, including Jet or its own.

He is wanting to work with OpenOffice Base which Apache OO's "equivalent" to Microsoft Office Access.

Which uses the HSQL engine for single user use. The wiki also said you can MySQL and many other engines.

Well ADO (Active Database Objects) is also ActiveX, just a particular kind of ActiveX interface. So saying it was done through ActiveX doesn't really say much. It could be through ADO to the underlaying Jet database or through some proprietary Office interface (which also has the notorious attribute to require at least a recompile of all interface VIs - and sometimes even make modifications to them - whenever you change Office version) to the Access interface.
