LabVIEW 7.0 Crashes when inserting "Instrument I/O Assistant" Express VI

Hello Corey,

I know that you have already tried reinstalling LabVIEW but I want to look more into the driver installation. Depending on the operating system you are using and the DAQ card that you have, we should try installing the newest version of the driver which will include MAX and the Instrument Assistant. If you let me know what your system is, I can recommend the best driver. Another pitfall that many people have trouble with is that the driver must be installed AFTER LabVIEW. We should look into these issues as I believe that somehow we have a bad installation of the DAQ driver.

Thanks,

Thanks Caroline,

It is running on Windows 2000, but I am unsure exactly what DAQ card I have. The system was set up before I came along, and I'm not sure what was used. Is there any easy way to find out?

Thanks,

Corey

Cory,

Well, unfortunately I am unable to grant you much in the way of eternal youth. As far as the I/O Assistant crashing, I didn't see any files missing from the zipped up directories you sent. Without being able to debug what exactly is causing the crash, I would suggest uninstalling/reinstalling MAX and the I/O Assistant. This will require you to uninstall any NI drivers you currently have as well. Then reinstall the drivers you need, including I/O Assistant, from your Driver CD.

if that doesn't work...

I would try to upgrade your drivers/MAX/IO Assistant. The version of the drivers you have are the ones that shipped with LabVIEW 7.0. There have been several updates to many of the associated parts that make up Instrument I/O Assistant since then. I would try getting a newer Driver CD and installing from there.

Hello,

You can determine what board you are using in Measurement and Automation Explorer. Since you said that the error occurs when you close the program we can hopefully still work within the program before it crashes. Once you open Measurement and Automation Explorer, look in the Configuration window on the left side. Open the folders My System -> Devices and Interfaces -> Traditional NI-DAQ devices. Under this folder you should see your device listed. You can then visit the website
http://www.ni.com/support/daq/versions.htm
to search for your board. Once you find your board look at what driver works for it under Windows 2000. You can click on that version number to reach the install page.
This should solve your problem. I would suggest uninstalling the older NI-DAQ driver before you install the new one by using Add Remove Programs in your Windows Control Panel. Also, make sure to take the card out of the computer before you install the drivers. The driver must be fully installed before you put the hardware back in.

Thanks,

Thanks Tommy,

I will try uninstalling/reinstalling those items. If it turns out I need to upgrade drivers, where would I go to obtain a new Driver CD?

Thanks,

Corey

Hi Caroline,

I should have known this before (I'm a bit embarrased), but I am not using a DAQ board, so there is no "Traditional NI-DAQ devices" folder in MAX. I am using VXI and GPIB for the I/O. Under "Devices and Interfaces" in MAX, there is a "PCI-GPIB" board and a "PCI-MXI-2" board. I didn't see any drivers for these at the link you provided. Does it still sound like this could be a driver problem?

Thanks,

Corey

Corey,

If the uninstall/reinstall doesn't work, then I'll work with you on getting a newer version of the driver CD. Let me know what happens after reinstalling.

Also - I apologize for only responding once a day - I used to get notifications on threads I subscribed to every time someone posted. But now I only seem to get a bundle of them every day. I will try to figure out why that is happening and maybe this will go faster if I don't wait to email you only once a day. 🙂 Thanks for your patience.

Well, good news--I uninstalled the I/O Assistant and MAX (which forced me to also uninstall LabVIEW 7.0 and everything related), then reinstalled the whole package, and now the problem has been resolved. That process took me almost 2 full hours, but now MAX closes without an error, and I can insert the I/O assistant in LabVIEW without crashing. Woo-hoo! The bad news is that some things were not reinstalled, including NI-VXI 3.3 and NI-VISA 3.0.1f3, and now I can't see any of my VXI instruments. I'll have to figure out how to find and install the necessary drivers. Once I do that, hopefully everything will still work, as it is conceivable that the problem could have been caused by one of those things.

Anyway, thanks for your help. Any advice on where to find the missing drivers would be appreciated, but I'll be on vacation from now until January 3, so it will be a while before I get to try actually using my functional system :).

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!
