LabVIEW 7.1 programs not working when upgrading PPC's to 10.5.8

Hello All.  I have been running LabVIEW 7.1 on my PPC Mac's under OS 10.3.9 for six years, and have had no issues whatsoever hooking it up to HP 34401A DMM's.  As I do not have funding (Purdue Chemistry) to get new computers, I decided to finally upgrade the Mac OS to 10.5.8 Leopard.  That allowed for much better internet browsers, as well as newer Office versions.

After successfully upgrading the OS, I was still able to open the LV programs and see the front panels.  However, when I click the "Start Trial" button to start collecting either voltages or resistances, there is no handshake (no click on the DMM) and after five seconds the LV program crashes and closes.  I do know that these same programs require a bit of re-working to work on LV 8.5, as they are not compatible as written.  But I didn't expect LV 7.1 would cause issues.

Since I have PPC Mac's, I realize that LV 8.5 is as recent as I can get, and we have a site license for that.  Newer versions are not supported.  I am wondering if I can get these programs to operate again under 7.1 with this newer Mac OS, or should I upgrade to LV 8.5 and work out the necessary changes to the program.  Thanks in Advance!  .... Paul

Forgot to mention.  I am using PCI-GPIB cards purchased from NI with a GPIB cable to connect to the DMM's.  Perhaps I need an updated driver, but they seem to require LV 8.2 and up.

Yes, you need newer drivers that have support for your new OS (Which wasn't concieved of when LabVIEW 7.1 era drivers were developed)

Yes, modern drivers that have support for your OS have Dropped support for LabVIEW 7.1.

You are about 10 years behind the curve and even 8.20 is 5.5 years old- way past its prime!

What other Software are you using that is so old? TestStand 2.0? Office 2000? I.E 5.0? (or the MAC equivallents)

Hi Jeff.  The old software that I have been using are either Safari 1.0 (crashes on modern web sites) or Firefox 2.0, which are the latest browsers supported by Mac OS 10.3.9, as well as Office 2004.  Office 2008 does not run on 10.3.9, it requires at least 10.4.x.  My students are not very familiar with the older Word version, so I felt the upgrade would benefit them.  Also, I use Igor Pro 5 for creating graphs and layouts, so there is no issue with that program on Leopard.

I kept using LV 7.1 because all of the programs work perfect as written, each with variations of the original driver from NI.  I tried using LV 8.2, but these programs no longer worked with that.  I suppose that I should install LV 8.5, and work through the necessary modifications while using the newer driver for this to be fixed, perhaps the driver revision 4.4.5 for the hp34401a.  I am fortunate to have access to a LabVIEW  trainer here in our chemistry department at Purdue, so next week we will get on this.  Thanks, Paul
