LabVIEW IDE for Open Alliance Mobile Phones

Hi All:

Google is creating an open source OS for cell phones in the Open Alliance.  Big cell phone companies are jumping aboard with Google's initiative and I was wondering how NI would play a role in this.

For more info go to this link: http://code.google.com/android/#utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-bk&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=android

The APIs are accessed through the Java programming language.

The lower level APIs are Linux drivers and the middle layers are written in C/C++

I believe it's straightforward for NI to expand their LV PDA to incorporate Android.  This would definitely give the LabVIEW Everywhere paradigm a big boost.

My hope is NI will devlop for Android because the new do everything on your cell phone shift (including data acquisition & control) will only increase in demand from here.  NI is the leader & it would be a shame if some other company decided to go this route first.

Any other thoughts?

Robert

I'm not sure this is so straightforward. The PDA module converts your LabVIEW code to C and then compiles it to a Windows CE target using Microsoft's compiler. This is an error prone process and I wouldn't be shocked if it included quite a few things which were specific to WM and which would not work on the Linux based Android. If it was that simple, I assume NI would not have dropped support for Palm.

I'm sure it's possible. The only question is whether NI would decide it wants to go into it.

I am not sure about  the decisions on this so far. But it might be a great idea for you to put this as a product suggestion for Research and Development to evaluate the matter. Please feel free to add in this suggestion by visiting National Instruments product suggestion center at:

After working with Android for a while I also see this as a very useful environment for a LabView port, something like the old PDA toolkit but not limited to just a few hardware devices. With a multitude of Android Smartphones and low cost MIDs coming online in the next year or so I would love to be able to develop on these platforms using LabView - I've submitted this suggestion to NI, fingers crossed...

I doubt that NI ever will launch a new PDA platform.

even Symbian with millions of devices out there was never an option.
