LabVIEW at 20!

I started looking into LabVIEW when it was first introduced on the Windows platform. I was working for Polaroid and thought it might have potential as a replacement for the text-based programs that were used on our growing line of test equipment. It slowly became the sole programming language for the entire world-wide camera testing lineup. The first program I wrote took many months...the last only a few days.
Sadly, all of the test equipment is being moth-balled (basically trashed)  as Polaroid is being dismantled and destroyed by the current owner.

OK, I'm in...  LabView 2, 1990 or so.
Still have the LabView 2 and LabView 2 Advanced training mauals complete with some ancient blue non "HD" disks. We were working on Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU's) test and evaluation software. Two of the completed units flew to the moon on Clementine!

I started in the early 90's using a MAC, an NI TI-DSP based ISA board and an SCXI chassis.  The system worked great for real-time closed loop control.  I've been using LabVIEW NI stuff ever since.  Works great, most of the time.

I've just started a mass compile from Version 8 to version 8.01. From the looks of it it will be another twenty years before I can do any freakin work Smiley Sad

YES PLEASE !!!

I would also love to have a (30d) trial version , even if I have to reinstall windows 3.1 (or whatever)

How about a VM- setup ? Maybe Apple spend the old OS and we all can try out ?

I believe I still have LV 5.1.

Since I'm currently at 6.1 this is hardly surprising......

I think 5.1 works on Windows 98 anyway, so at least a Win3.1 installation is not required (Although it is the method of choice for 64% of all IT masochists).

Henrik, I think you meant "donate" when you wrote "spend"?

I do remember programming without an undo function.  Man, that way you could REALLY learn to concentrate.  Was that 5.1 or earlier?

Shane.

Using LV 6.1 and 8.2.1 on W2k (SP4) and WXP (SP2)

Shane,

I have 5.1 and even 4.1 somewhere on old backups (and W98 still running on a PC)  and started with LV3.1 (definitely without undo, and I still automatically press Ctrl-S after every bigger modification and always before I run a vi)

I would love to try out the really first (MAC) version.  If not a VM snapshot maybe NI can bring up a Web version. Why not with an old MAC, a webcam and some sort of mouse/keyboard interface?.

It's like turning on an old tube-radio and listening to the humm.  (Actually I used a tube radio to debug my first steps in Sinclair ZX81 assembler debugging Smiley Very Happy  )

And yes I had 'donate' in mind. Thank you for the correction, still learning english by *dboing*.

OK, I can't let that one go without a follow-up. I once saw Spock do that in "The City on the Edge of Forever" (?) but I could not ask follow-up Q's about what he was really doing.

So how did the tube radio help with your debugging?

Curious,

Ben
