LabVIEW vs C/ATLAS

Hi,
I'm writing a proposal for a system that currently requires a C/ATLAS based solution. I need to pitch why a LV solution is (hopefully) better. I don't have any experience with C/ATLAS. I was hoping somebody could point me to a brief or a whitepaper that compares and contrasts the two.

Thanks,
Bill F

I found a couple things when I did a search of NI's site. One is here and there's a couple articles here that might be of interest. I also seem to remember some articles in the trade magazines Test & Measurement World (http://www.reed-electronics.com/tmworld/) and Evaluation Engineering (http://evaluationengineering.com/). You might want to search their sites for articles on the subject. Atlas is pretty old. I first used it some 28 years ago when I was fresh out of college. It was a strictly text based language and the last time I looked, no true Atlas compilers existed. Atlas programs n
eeded to be translated into C or Basic and there was somewhat of a performance hit. The language did have some syntax elements specific to test and measurement (like a setup and a measure command) that probably made sense when it was first created but, imho, is not required any longer. I have no idea if any of the more recent dialects support threading and parallel execution so that's one avenue to investigate in your comparison. I would also think that LabVIEW would give you an enormous benefit in the availabilty of instrument drivers, analysis tools, and all the add-ons.

These are two very different animals you are talking about here. One is a racoon and the other is a gacelle. Each one has its pro/against.
ATLAS and C/ATLAS are still prime in the DoD insofar the vehicles developped in the last 30 or so years keep working (call it amortization). Once the DoD phase out these systems there will be potential for prime contracts with "other" test languages and/or systems. For now though, if the ATE is for a stablished system in the field, you'll better learn ATLAS. There is hope though, with the push from the ARMY to move to the XXI century, more and more programs will possibly be founded for "new" technology with COTS base and therefore your LV will have a chance to win.
