LabView 2011 crashes frequently when saving VIs or projects

Running LabView 2011on a PC with Windows  XP service pack 3.

Not sure where to put this post but I have been running LabView 2011 for many months now and it seems like it will crash about twice a month whenever I choose the Save menu item. (Not Save As or Save for Previous.) I am talking about a crash that annihilates every setting to the point that when you reboot the PC (since it won’t even close with End Task) and restart LabView 2011, it is as if it is running for the very first time. It has no history of files or projects, it fails to recognize that it crashed (no attempt to restoring files), and any ‘options’ or tool palette changes made are wiped. This is extremely frustrating since I have many options redefined. The VIs and projects are from simple ones to complex ones, it doesn’t matter.

Just thought someone should know.

So are you letting us know so you can get some help, are you looking for sympathy, or are you just venting, or what? I'm confused. Clearly, this is not an endemic problem, otherwise this forum would have had a thread running about 50 pages long about how LabVIEW 2011 keeps crashing when you save. Since this doesn't exist, we can safely conclude it's probably specific to your system. Which brings me back to asking what is that you want from us? I would suggest starting with the basics: Check to see if your anti-virus is interfering. Try deleting the labview.ini file so you start with a clean one (this has been known to cause crashes). Try a repair of the LabVIEW install. Try a reinstall.

Hi j.masse

I do have sympathy with you.

It is very frustrating when even the LV 2011 so highly praised for its stability crashes. It does this here as well.

A reason I found lies in Disabled Diagram Structures. Make sure they are excutable although they may be diabled.

And a good hint is to save the labview.ini file in "program files\National Instruments\Labview 2011".

So you always have backup in case LV crashes.

Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestions Gabi. I do frequently use Disabled Diagram Structures so I will pay attention to that detail and the idea of saving the .ini file is also appreciated. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who experiences these crashes. Fortunately I enjoy LabView so much that I am willing to endure these temporary setbacks.

So it seems like msercurio_fc so smart that he doesn't have time to answer reasonable questions; just belittle the person that asks reasonable questions. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. Why are you attempting to answer CUSTOMER questions when you have no patients for what YOU consider incompetence... Unbelievable.

What is YOUR problem CharlieP?

Smercurio did take the time to suggest some things to try.  So I don't know why you say he didn't take time to answer basic questions.  I don't anywhere in that post where he belittled the poster or call that person incompetent.

The problem is that the original poster's message didn't actually have any questions in it.  It was just a vent, or a rant or something.  There really was not question or a plea for help.

(PS:.. patience not patients, he's not a doctor)

And the reasonable question was what, exactly? Did you actually see a question mark at the end of any sentence anywhere in the post? Clearly, the user wasn't interested in asking a question, but simply venting. No description of the setup. No description of the project. No description of the code. No decription of what else the user may be running, such as what, if any, antivirus programs was running (as these have been known to cause programs to crash for no apparent reason). No nothing. Just "my LabVIEW crashes twice a month". Perhaps my problem is that too few people read How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

I do find it curious that you went out your way to write such a post (with CAPS, no less), on your second post ever, the first one being from January of last year. I'm not sure whether to feel defensive over such a post, or whether to feel honored that you decided to single me out on your second post.

I'll go with the latter. It makes me smile.

You are an angry person. People with questions must be scared to ask you anything. You are unlike all the other tech support people I have worked with at NI.

I am neither angry, nor do I work for NI.

What led you to conclude that I work for NI?

People please, lets keep this on a professional level. My orignal post was a venting (very true) but also a plea for help though I realize there was never a question asked so here it is.

Approximately twice a month my LabView 2011 crashes after attempting a 'Save' to the point that my system needs a reboot.

Are there tips and tricks out there (such as creating a copy of the .ini file) to help restore LabView after it crashes and are there 'normal' observations to help LabView run more stabile, such as closing all open windows, observing Disable Diagram structures...?

I am running on a Dual core Dell desktop with Windows XP Profesional SP3, LV2011 Developer Suite, 4GB RAM, plenty of disk space and yes, a company sponsered, pain in the butt, antivirus running in the background.

Next question:

Why would a reinstall of LabView help if LabView runs fine for a couple weeks and then hangs? Again, the only time I experience LabView hanging is when I am doing a 'Save'. Also, keep in mind that our IT dept hold the LabView disks and that it can take a day or two to get someone to try a reinstall thereby delaying my progress.

Any helpful tips are very appreciatedSmiley Happy
