For a couple of simple digital inputs, Hummer's idea of using the the handshaking lines and monitoring them is simple and dirt cheap. As always, be careful when wiring up something external to your serial port. Applying the wrong voltage or current could blow up your computer. A simple on/off switch that opens and closes the computer's own voltages on those lines is generally safe.
