Long delay in Project Explorer startup ("Not responding")

Using LabVIEW 2011 on Windows 7. PC is quad-core + 4 Gb RAM.

We have started seeing a long delay when opening the LabVIEW Project Explorer for our project. The Project Explorer window label displays     "(Not responding)". On checking the Windows Task Manager, we see the LabVIEW.exe memory usage steadily rising to about 700 Mb during this period. Eventually the memory usage settles down and the Project Explorer becomes responsive.

Now this may simply be said to be a feature of our large application but we have never seen the "Not responding" before using LabVIEW 2011 and the startup delay seems much longer than before. This may be a Windows 7 or LabVIEW 2011 feature as we do not see it with a LabView 2010/WIndows XP environment.

I regularly work in LV2009 with an LVProject open which has about 2000 VIs. Usually everything is normal.
The problem most likely to happen if I have more than one project open. It may also happen if I open an lvlib or an lvclass open in its own window, but I'm not sure.

This also tends to happen if I use ctrl-F in the project window to find a VI, though it doesn't always happen.

Once it starts, the situation does not improve until I restart LabVIEW.Is it the same situation as above

Hi PipT,

Many thanks for your post.

There are currently no known issues concerning the Project Explorer being unresponsive for LabVIEW 2011 when used with Windows 7 as you described. Unless a problem is widely reported and replicated on multiple systems, it is unfortunately not something we are easily able to provide a solution for. In this scenario it seems likely that it is either due to the size of your LabVIEW project and/or the condition of your OS and LabVIEW installation. I would suggest trying to create a new smaller project and opening this to see if the issue is still present. This should allow you to determine whether it is simply the project size or whether it could be an OS/installation issue.

I hope that helps, let us know how you get on.

Yes as Paul said if you have a larger project you have this kind of issue but you can do a try. Just check what are the items that are not really used in the project and remove them (Project Cleanup) then this should eventually speed up your loading because unwanted files are will not get loaded and also check for the other softwrare installed in your PC.

Yes we have a large application. My issue is regarding the change (increased time) when using LabVIEW 2011 compared with previous versions of LabVIEW. Its unfortunate that a new version of LabVIEW shows worse performance (we have also seen this with other releases).

No I won't say that LV2011 is performning worse its more good compared to the previous versions but since NI has provided lot other additional toolkits and if you install them then it takes long time to load. Try cleaning up the code and uninstall the unwanted softwares installed in your PC (Even very small applications) and then restart the PC and lauch now it should be faster than before.

I would like to add that with a large project, Project explorer often crashes and I can never complete building an application I can no longer distribute my application and it is a problem. I hope we get more compaints so they will look into it.
