Measurement I/O > Serial Read/Write functions vi's for MODBUS communication?

Is it possible to use the standard Labview Measurement I/O Serial Read/Write functions to communicate with a MODBUS device?  If so, any examples?

I know at one point there was a free serial MODBUS RTU palette of vi's available, but some comments I've read about this lead me to believe it is outdated and very buggy.

NI Modbus Library for LabVIEW

I use it and it works fine.  I wouldn't say it is "very buggy".  And it went through an update in the last couple years.

Read the comments on the download page which does discuss a particular bug with it and see if it might affect you.  I've never had it cause me any problems.  It seems like most of the comments relate to ASCII mode.  I've only ever used RTU mode.
