That was a broad question...

Define "automation", because what it means to you may mean something quite different to me.

Test Automation ?

Home Automation?

Process Control Automation?

You could also include subjects such as:

Auto pilot

robotics

Data Aquisition

Auto Tuning

Remote assist

Flexible manufacturing

Measurement and Analysis

and the list goes on..

It depends what you want to "automate"

muks..

are you asking me, or is it a general question?

You can't have a "preferred" language which covers all.  It depends on the requirements.  We would hope that LabVIEW can do all, and it can probably do most.

When you deal with Single Board Computers, or Non-NI products, or embedded systems or microcontrollers, or ..... (fill in the blanks) ...  you can't say: "oh.. by the way, the hardwasre has to be designed so that this or that software platform is used for development".  You will sit down with the hardware team and discuss the requirements and based on those, you will select the appropriate platform.

That's why I keep finding it rediculous when people keep on asking "what's the better language to learn or to use..."  It depends in which field you work in, what  hardware you work with and what you actually develop software for.

Don't get me wrong, if in any of the things I've mentionned, you happen to develop test software (not BIST or at the firmware level), then LabVIEW is probably the preferred choice for those who know the language or are not biased by other languages.  It's all relative to what the software is used for.

I'm sure there must be reasonable reasons why people would choose C# or JAVA or Visual Basics (but not Vee 😉 ).  So the same applies to why you would select LabVIEW.  There's personal preference and there is the right tool (platform) for the job.

Just to update, I am done with basic level of C# . NET tutorials, and I now feel that C# is too powerful and flexible than LabVIEW! 😮

It is a complete Object Oriented driven language.......Waiting to see complete OOP features in LabVIEW soon(LV has a limit on OOP features when compared to C#)... NI are you listening?

Ray,

May i ask why not VEE?

I have seen people who have provided solutions in VEE and the solutions were superb.

It works like LabVIEW and i myself did couple of  projects on VEE....(The only thing i found it little difficult since i am used to LV)

HP Vee.

Seen it.  It's okay..

Vee was LabVIEW's rival..  Now, very few places still use it.  As a matter of fact, one place was desperately looking for a Vee programmer.  I think they went to LabVIEW  😉
