My application freezes up when I plug in additional USB devices?

I recently upgraded our testers all to the windows 7 operation system and LabView 2012.  The applications were using the older PCI-6013’s and I have upgraded them to use USB-6009’s.  When I run the test application, the vi runs fine and there aren’t any problems. We have installed a barcode scanner and a camera on the computers and now there are problems running our test application. If either the camera or the scanner are used, the application freezes and doesn’t operate unless the computer is shut down. I thought that it could possibly be a power issue so I installed an independent hub. Nothing that we have tried seems to correct the problem. If the scanner and camera are disconnected, the application will run without any problems. Any ideas?

Soooo, if your program is running and you plug-in one of these new devices the program "freezes"

  1. Please explain "freezes". The program becomes unresponsive? The OS becomes unresponsive?
  2. While the program is frozen what is CPU utilization doing? Is the hard drive running?
  3. If you restart the computer with the devices plugged in can you run your program?
  4. If you restart the computer without the devices plugged in but plug them in before starting your program what happens?

I would clue into the OS upgrade.

Perhaps there is a driver incompatability with the scanner and camera causing the hub to malfunction.  Double check those drivers in the device manager.

Mike,

The application is none responsive (Frozen) after I use either the scanner or the camera. I can't even recover it if I restart the PC. We must unplug the USB for the camera and the scanner both. Then perform a complete shutdown. If we try to restart the PC and not shut it down, the application still will not function. The OS seems to be functioning normally. In order to use the application we must have the camera and scanner both unplugged. We also checked that the scanner and camera both have the latest drivers installed.

Jeff,

I verified that the camera and scanner both have the latest drivers installed.

I don't know which brand of PCs you have, but with Dell PCs, after you upgrade the OS, you need to install the driver called Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software, and then other drivers.

You should pay attention to this type of issue.

Will the computer startup normally after a shutdown if the camera and scanner are plugged in before the computer is turned on?

They may have the latest drivers.  But, are those drivers compatable with Win7?

When we upgraded our equipment, the PC was replaced with a new computer that our IT department configured for me. This is a new HP machine.

The PC will start normally after a shutdown and the application will work with the camera and scanner plugged in. When either the scanner or camera are used, the application will stop to function. Then the camera and scanner must be unplugged and the computer must be shut down.
