I'm in the midst of choosing cRIO modules for my MXI-Express RIO chassis and I came across the NI 9219 universal module. Whilst reading through the user guide, I noticed that it says in two seperate sections that the "Digital In mode" and "Open Contact mode" are "supported only in CompactRIO systems." As I don't have the actual hardware for me to test out, I created a LabVIEW Project using the FPGA wizard and had it instantiate a MXI-Express RIO Chassis (NI 9159) connected directly under "My Computer." I then had it populate an NI 9219 module and set channel 0 to "Digital In" mode and Channel 1 to "Open Contact" mode. After that I dragged & dropped both channel nodes on to my block diagram and I was pleased to see that the LabVIEW compiler thinks everything is OK.
So my question is, whenever I read "is only supported on CompactRIO systems" does that also include MXI-Express RIO systems as well? If so, looks like some the documentation for the cRIO modules need updating.

Hi SeanDonner,
Yes, the MXI-Express RIO is considered to be part of the cRIO system. In addition, for future forum goers, the Ethernet RIO and EtherCAT RIO chassis are also part of the cRIO system.
