NI Developer Suite Installation

Dear Sir:

I just installed NI Developer Suite 8.5.   I established connectivity with my target device and can run programs.

However, there is an issue that has arisen and I require some installation specific information.

I have read many installation "horror" stories at this website and I don't want my installation to turn into another "horror story".    Normally, I would just do a "common sense" installation and not think twice about the program installation.   However, the horror stories have made me think twice about how to go about completing my installation.

NI Developer Suite 8.5 comes with 12 disks.

I only needed to install one disk, the first disk, entitled,"NI Labview 8.5 Professional Development System and Device Drivers DVD for Windows Vista/XP/2000",  and I established instrument connectivity and ran a program.

The second disk, entitled, "NI Labview 8.5 Professional Development System for Windows Vista/XP/2000", was not installed.

This is what happened.  I put the second disk into my disk drive and a message box popped up and asked me if I wanted to install LABVIEW.  I had already installed LABVIEW and got the program running.   I didn't want to take a chance, given the time it took to install one disk, and install a duplicate program which could result in a "horror" story installation.

There is no literature that comes out of the box that tells me exactly what this second disk does and how it differs from the first disk.   Can you please tell me what this second disk does and how it differs from the first disk and, more importantly, what happens if I go through another installation routine?

Hello!

The NI Developer Suite contains a lot of toolkits and modules for development with LabVIEW. Disc 1 installs LabVIEW and many toolkits, but there are more on disc 2. If you chose not to install the extra toolkits and modules, then disc 2 is not necessary.

I want to double check that you actually have 12 discs. The 8.5 Developer Suite is an old enough version that I cannot find a copy of the entire installation. Most Developer Suites have 2-3 discs.

This KnowledgeBase article ( http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/EF2EAAFCE8460C1286257974006D63A3?OpenDocument) explains the contents of the Developer Suite DVDs back to 2008 Q4. 8.5 may differ slightly, but the pattern is the same.

Hope this helps!

I believe Q3 2008 was the first "Platform DVD" set (LabVIEW 8.6/TestStamd 4.1).  LabVIEW 8.5 and Teststand 3.5/4.0/4.01 shipped separately.  There may have been options for DVD or CD (Available on request) but LabVIEW 8.5 fit on one DVD

It sounds like the OP has several regular updates. (8.5, 8.5 SP1, 8.5.1, 8.5.1 SP1)
