NI ServiceLocator is not running on OS X

I am running LV2010 on Mac OSX, 10.6

When I find click on "Find Examples", I get a popup windows:

The NI ServiceLocator is not running.  You will not be able to browse by Directory Structure"

NI Example Finder starts and when I doubleclick on an example I get the following error:

"An error occurred - The NI Service Locator is not running"

I have found posts about this for Windows, but nothing for OS X - any ideas?

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil,

So I found a KnowledgeBase article that was written for Windows that explains how to get rid of the error by restarting the Service Locator.  I then went to figure out how to disable/enable the Service Locator on a Mac.

Disabling NI Service Locator for the Current Session
Complete the following steps to disable the NI Service Locator for the current session.

  1. Launch the Service Locator__NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS.vi located in the labview\resource\system\ServiceLocator.llb directory.
  2. Run the VI and click the STOP button to toggle between enabling or disabling the NI Service Locator.

You will have to disable it in the VI and then enable it again.

I hope this helps!

Kim,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I followed your instructions, however, in the directory you specify, there is only 1 file:  HelpServer.llb

I searched the LabVIEW directory (also, the entire drive) and there is no ServiceLocator.llb.

I also unpackaged the dmg file and looked at the pax files directly (lsbom Archive.bom) and for 5 packages, there is no file to be installed.

I have attached a zip file with a file list of the 5 packages installed.

I know this functionality should work - just working out how to set it up...

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil,

Is this the first time you have tried to open the example finder?  It seems like you may have just had a bad install of LabVIEW.  I know it may seem tedious, but could you try and reinstall LabVIEW? This seems to have solved the issue in the past. Let me know. Thanks!

I removed LabVIEW entirely and ensure all LV directories were deleted from /Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Application Support, /Applications.

I then did a clean install.

I get the same result - the NI Service Locator is not running.

I have attached 2 screenshots of the error messages I get:

1.  when I open Example Finder

2.  when I double click on an example

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil,

Thanks for trying to reinstall LabVIEW.  I apologize that that did not fix the issue.

It seems that you might have a firewall that is preventing the Service Locator from running.  Could you please try to turn off your firewall if you have one?

Also, one other thing that we can try is to stop and restart the Help Server that you mentioned you had.

Disabling the Help Server for the Current Session
Complete the following steps to disable the Help Server for the current session.

  1. Launch the HelpServer__NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS.vi located in the labview\resource\system\HelpServer.llb directory.
  2. Run the VI and click the STOP button to toggle between enabling or disabling the Help Server.

Let me know what happens! Thanks!

Kim,

I have a firewall to my network LAN, but I don't think you are talking about that - correct?

The firewall on my Mac itself is off.

I will try to stop and start the Help Service and let you know.

Thanks

Neil

I have the same problem with newly purchased LabVIEW 2010 Student Edition for the Mac.

I also cannot find the ServiceLocator.llb file in the specified path, only the HelpServer.llb file.

I have tried stopping and restarting the Help server as described but the problem persist.

I have read somewhere that for the 2010 Windows version, the NI Service Locator as been merged with the Web server.

Is it the case for the mac also? How can I enable the web server if that is the case?

Thanks,

Simon

I found no good answer to this issue.

Windows version works perfectly, but Mac version doesn't.
