NI USB-485

Solved!
Go to solution

I have installed NI-Serial 17.5 and trying to use USB-485 with LabView 2017, unfortunately the converter is not even displayed in the Windows Device Manger as com-port or unrecognized com-port adapter.

Are there any compatibility issues between the adapter and Windows 10? Are there any additional drivers one has to install?

The adapter works fine on machine with Windows 95.

Did you follow the instructions on the Serial Installation Guide from NI?  Did you install the NI Serial Software for Windows?  Does your device show up in MAX?

Hi,

Over the years I used a lot of USB serial converters. After plug-in some will show up in the device manager and are installed correctly while others need a lot of attention to get it working.

Your USB device should show up somewhere in the device manager. As USB device, as serial port, as a unknown device, ...

If it is not showing up anywhere I think your converter is defective.

When you have the device manager open does the device manager react if you plug-in the converter ?

What do you mean by NI Serial Software? If you mean this https://www.ni.com/en-no/support/downloads/drivers/download.ni-serial.html#329032

then the answer is yes.

I used the NI-Serial Troubleshooter and the result is shown below.

Used Interface not listed and in the part describing the installation basically boils down to 4 points

To install your USB serial hardware, complete the following steps:

  1. If you are installing a USB-485/4, connect the external power supply.
  2. Connect the USB cable from the USB hardware to an available USB port on your computer or USB hub.
  3. If your computer is not already on, turn it on.
  4. Windows will automatically detect your hardware.

Which is not working in my case.

The device is neither visible in Device Manager nor in MAX. The Device Manager reacts to inserting and removing the USB cable but no changes are visible.

As I wrote before the device works on an old PC with Windows 95 so I am pretty sure it is not defective.

It seems that there might be a problem with the PC. I used the converter on another PC with Windows 10 and it works without a problem.

USB can be finicky.  Try another port.

In Device Manager one can choose to display hidden devices:

I guess the problem is the version of the NI-Serial. I had the 19.0 installed which is not compatible with the 485. On the other PC I have version 15.0 and it works fine.

The NI-Serial 17.5 installation did nothing.

Case closed.

Thank you all for the answers.
