Number of Labview Installs

Dear Sir:

I just purchased Labview but I haven't received it in the mail yet.

I am enthusiastic about the product and I would like to know a little bit about the product before it arrives.

Generally, when I purchase software from other companies sometimes there is a limited number of installs.

This is my problem, I own a GPIB card, but it is old, therefore, it resides on an old computer using an old operating system.

I own a new computer - I would prefer to use Labview on my new computer and transfer programs onto my old computer.

Can you tell me how many installs of Labview I am permitted?

It really depends on the license you purchased.  If it is the standard purchase, 1 machine.  However, you can use the Run Time Engine on an unlimited number of computers.  So develop on the one machine and build executables and installers to run the programs on your other machines.

The last time I read the license agreement, it was 3 installs. One for the office, one for the lab, and one for home.

How old is "old"?  Since you just bought LV, it'll be LV 2012.  According to the readme here:

http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/$CXIV/ATTACH-AEEE-8UTM3U/$FILE/readme.html

It only supports XP SP3 and later.

Now, I do not know if LV will refuse to run on the older machine, or if NI says it is unsupported, which means it might work, but they're not guaranteeing it and won't help you with any issues.  Many older versions of LV will run on newer OSs although NI doesn't support it, but I have a feeling that you will not see that in this case.

While waiting for the mail, you can download and install the evaluation version from the webpage and add the activation code next week. 🙂

With regard to crossrulz's  reply, the "run time engine" that you are referring to, is that program a free trial license install?

It's not a trial.  It is free to distribute (as of now).  If you build your source code into an executable (depending on what you purchased, you may or may not be able to do this), you will need the runtime engine for your executable to run.  It will be included with your LabVIEW DVDs or you can download it from NI's website.

If you build an installer, you can include the Run Time Engine in the installer.  It is available in the "Additional Installers" page.  It is totally free to distribute as much as you need.

Can you please define and distinguish between an "installer" and the "run time engine" program?
