PDA HELP!!! - Cannot build my project!!!!

Hi Everyone:

I have some wierdness goin on with Labview PDA 8.0.1 that seems to make it impossible to build my application.  First, it has been a bit pf a pain for the last couple of months.  Everytime I had closed Labview and reopened my project, I had to specify a top level vi.  It seems as though Labview just forgot everytime I shut down Labview and started it back up.  Now, it seems to have gotten worse, not only is there no top level vi selected, but in the source file section of the build specification, there are NO files ... I should have over 90 vi's in there ... but none of them exist in the build specification.  Not only that ... when I try and add an existing file to the project (one that already exists in the project) it tells me that it is already there(as expected).  So I have no way of building my application now.  And even when I try to make a new build specification .. it too has no vis in it that I can choose for the top level vi for the build specification.

Anyone have any experience with this problem?  Anyway to solve this short of removing all the files and re-adding them to the project?  Any comment NI?

Greycat,

This behavior should not be expected while working in LabVIEW PDA. After several attempts I was not able to recreate a PDA project that loses its Top Level VI in the Build Specification. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Try removing all VIs from the project so that only the top level VI remains. At this point, does the Build Specification retain its designated Top Level VI?
2) Try creating a new PDA project to determine if the same behavior is seen with a new project.
3) If it is possible, use another computer with LabVIEW PDA to open the project and examine the Build Specification. I would be interested to see if the other instance of LabVIEW also loses the association with the Top Level VI.

If the same behavior does not replicate on another machine, we may try a LabVIEW reinstallation. If the other machine experiences the same issue, we will then have to troubleshoot from there.

Well .. I ended up makig a new project and adding all my vi's into it and saving the build specification ... funny thing is it does the same thing ... forgets the top level VI.  But it is only with this project ... none of the other PDA projects I have do this.  I find it very strange that even after I rebuilt it from scratch it still did the same thing.  In the begining, it wasn't a big deal because I would just simply specify the top level vi in morning and it would be good all day long ... until I closed it and opend it again.  But then I get this where it sees none of my VI in the build specification.  Even if I try and create a new build specification, it still sees none of my vis.

I'm sory to say that I don't really have the time to try installing on another computer at this time ... (well maybe soon, but I can't promise anything) ... but when I do .. I'll post to this thread so we can move forward with this ...

Indeed a very odd problem.

Thanks for following this up with me

Greycat,

Indeed an interesting issue. It sounds like the problem is somehow linked to this top VI or this set of VIs that you are using. I would try copying the contents of the top level VI to a new VI to see if this behaves the same way. I cannot tell what may be going on with the file in question, so that may rule out any possible file corruption.

Again, it would be interesting to see if you can reproduce this behavior on another machine. Whenever you get a chance, please let me know if the behavior repeats. Thank you very much for your time and your patience.

Greycat,

I've had problems building exe's when combining LV 8.0.1 and Teststand. This could be a similar bug. After a lot of head-banging I contacted NI and their research team found a bug in the deployment utility. Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for the responses ... It is an interesting problem ... I tried copying the contents of my top level VI to a new VI and used that as my top level VI .. and it did not make any difference .. I also tried systematically removing parts of the vi and resaving the project but none of that worked either ... the wierd thing is that all my other projects are fine and do not have this problem.  I will try the othe computer option as sooon as I get a chance.

Again Thanks for the responses.

Just a note to anyone coming across this thread ... the issue I was having seems to have been fixed in PDA 8.2.
