Quadrature Encoder with SCXI-1200: Measure speed and direction?

I have a quadrature encoder (rotary, incremental, Ch A, B, TTL). Anticipate max. freq. of 5kHz.

Are there existing examples (DAQ hookup, LabVIEW VIs, or ...) of using the 82C53 counter chip with a quadrature encoder?

How to measure speed and direction?

Does the indicated freq. create a problem?

With the 8253, there is only one LabVIEW vi you need to control the counter: ICTR Control.vi. I'm attaching a vi written in LabVIEW 3 that I resaved in LabVIEW 5. It was written by another engineer and performs a quad encoder measurement for this type of chip. It can provide you a starting place.
