Hi Kevin,
Are you using Internet Explorer as your FTP browser? IE has a caching issue with FTP. It actually saves the file and directory info in its cache. So when you remove the drive, etc, it doesn't detect the change. Instead it loads the file list from the cache. You will have to clear the IE cache (perhaps restarting IE) to get a refreshed list.

I was using a Command Prompt to FTP from my WinXP puter to the LabView RealTime puter.

Hi Kevin,
Do you see the behavior if you disconnect the ftp connection to the RT controller and then reestablish it? FTP to the drive using command prompt. Then remove your drive, and try using IE to connect to it via FTP. Can you still get to g: ? What about if you close and retry using Command Prompt? This will help us figure out if this is a caching issue on the Windows side or the RT side.

Does this cause any programmatic issues with your application? Perhaps a different workaround can be implemented to detect a removed drive.
