Recessed cluster

By custimizing controls you can achieve most things you need in terms of GUI look and feel.  I have my own controls that I often use inplace of the labview defaults.

Paul, I hate the look of recessed clusters as well, but I can't seem to recreate yours. Are your examples custom controls or can this effect be duplicated with tools/colors?

These are simple custom controls.  I can post a simple nugget on customizing the look and feel of controls using native labview abilities, very easy to do.

Is it possible to do this with string controls too?

It is possible to customize just about any control. The ones in the "System" palette, however, are not as customizable, as they are intended to inherit the look and feel of the OS. In lieu of Paul's nugget you can crack open the LabVIEW Help as it contains a chapter on how to customize contros.
