Runtime Engine 6 on XP/Vista/Win 7?

Solved!
Go to solution

I'm updating an ancient windows 98 PC and have got a LabVIEW stand alone app running on Runtime Engine 6.

The Version 6 runtime says suitable for Win95/98/2000 which are all the old framework OS's but I see little mention of the newer ones.

My question is - has anyone had any success getting old apps like this to work on newer versions of windows or will I have to go back to the manufacturer and try and get them to rescript a more up to date version?

I don't think there's a general answer to this question. For example, if you are using NI hardware, you may need to update device drivers to a newer version, that may not be compatible with LV6.

I have a few 6.1 applications running under XP with a NI board, using the same drivers.

Also, I could get an LV7.0 app to work under Vista by disabling the UAC (User Access Control).

Thanks for that Paolo - that is encouraging. All of the data comes in via serial port so there is no DAQ card to worry about at least.

I'll guess I'll just dig in and see - I'll post my results later.

Ok, so the answer to this is yes mayby!

The runtime and standalone VI install fine. The VI does need compatability mode turning on to work but it works fine.

The only caveat is that the application seems to have a memory leak and therefore dissapears up its own backside after about 2 hours. However, I think this would be very application specific. Interesting that it does on XP and not on 98 though.

So the answer to the original question is yes it can work.
