Shared Variables and binding to IO items

Using LabView 2012 w/DSC module I programatically create and bind shared variables to IO items. When I create the shared variables as a single precision datatype it only returns the integer portion of the data from the IO item. When I change the type to double precision it works correctly

Is it possible to bind single precision variables to IO items?

Can you post a simple project that replicates this behavior so that I can try reproducing this in various versions of LabVIEW?
