Stuck with Operating Tool

I am trying to do the first tutorial (generate and display) in the getting started manual.  I am stuck because my cursor stays in the operating tool form.  "Getting Started" says (page 1-8) the cursor should turn into a resize cursor when I point to the bottom of the "Simulate Signal" box.  My cursor stays as a hand so I can't resize the box. Later (page 1-9) it says it will automatically change to the positioning tool when I point over the knob, but it doesn't. 
The cursor stays the shape of a hand no matter what I do.  I've tried with the program running and with it stopped.  I tried restarting labview and I even redid the tutorial up to this point.
What am I doing wrong?
I'm sure this is some simple mistake on my part.

You probably turned off the automatic tool selection.

Press shift and then right-click on the diagram to get the tools palette. On top is a square LED.

If it is green, automatic selection is on.

if it is dark, automatic selection is off.

Just click on it to turn it back on. 😄

Of course all this only applies in edit mode. Once the program is running (or in run mode), you can no longer do editing operations.

If you accidentally switched your VI into run mode, press ctrl+m to go back to edit mode.

Try using the manual tool from the tool palette.  Switch to automatic when you get used to it.

Depending on the labview version, you may have to look under View > Tools Palette (LV8.x) or Help > Show Tools Palette (pre LV8.x).

After you see the Tools Palette, click on the green LED at the top and turn it off.  Then select the desired tool.

That was it .  I guess the other guy who uses this computer turned it off.  Thank you so much for your help!

Perhaps the "tools palette" needs to be set to "Auto" mode.

In the "View" menu, select "Tools Palette" to make sure the palette is visible. Then click the top button on the palette to turn on the auto select feature.

Now the cursor should change to the correct tool as you hover over the various portions of a control or indicator.
