We would need more specific information to determine
exactly what the error is. What command were you
sending? Most likely you are missing a space, comma,
colon, etc., or used the wrong one of these separators.
You may still be getting data, but a parameter may
not be set the way you want it to be. Your data
could be in error. Like the oil light on your car,
never ignore error messages.
As far as writing data to a file, turn on the context
sensitive help. It is generally pretty good at
explaining how to wire things.
