I don't know of a definitive tutorial (though there may be one out
there), but here is a nice example from the NI Example Programs Database
that demonstrates the process:

A general exploration of what sorts of methods and properties are
exposed by LabVIEW is important, of course, and the best place for that
is probably LabVIEW's Online Reference (under Communication).
