Verify Ethernet connection

Dear all,

is there a way to know if a Ethernet device is connected? I have this 'object' that should control a set of detectors and the manufacturer told me that the connection to the Ethernet port is automatic..but I don't think that it's working. Any idea? Thanks in advance!

Does the device a a static IP address?  You can ping the address by going to the command prompt.  Also, what kind of Ehternet cable are you using and how are you connected to the computer (through a switch or crossover cable)?

Yes they have the static IP 10.0.0.1
Yes I tried pinging this IP.. see photo attached
The Ethernet cable is connected also with an adaptor: StarTech.com USB 2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter
Between the cable and the computer. I'm not sure what type of cable it is called.. it's the typical internet cable used in all purposes.

Looks like you are talking to the device from the command prompt.  Can you please expand more details why you think it is not working?

First of all, I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge but last time I used Labview it was something like 8 years ago.. btw, the problem is that when we press the start button, nothing happen.

The device is a x-ray detector, so also without any radiation coming in, there should be a default noise, so we should be able to se 'some number'..but this is not happening. When we press start it is like nothing is going on. So that's why I'd like to add something (like a led or whatever) to see when the connection is on..then if the connection is on and it is still not working, we can find the eventual other problems.

Have you tried detecting/creating the instrument in Measurement and Automation under network devices?

I usually create the VISA instrument for two reasons - to see if MAX will detect the device and be able to use it in the LabVIEW VISA Resource Name drop down list.

Hello again..apparently MAX can't see my object (that is a device connected through a ethenret-to-usb- adaptor)..I think that it is always connected because we can ping it..any other suggestion?we have a .net object that we should connect to a 'number indicator' but it doesnt give any result.
