See this link: https://www.ni.com/en/support/documentation/compatibility/16/ni-daqmx-and-labview-compatibility.html
It's not listed on the web page, but is in the spreadsheet download link on the right. FYI LabVIEW 7.0 works with DAQmx 7.0 to 8.1, and LabVIEW 7.1 works with DAQmx 7.2 to 8.9.

There seems to be no DAQmx for LV7, you'll have to use DAQ or upgrade LV. (I don't know if the traditional DAQ had simulated devices)

@michaelbalzer thanks, i didn't see the download link and thought the table was extensive (there should be some better information about that).
So, DAQmx 8.1 works with any LV7, but if OP has 7.1 i'd recommend the highest supported, DAQmx 8.9.

@Yamaeda No probs.
I see NI's fancy new DAQmx download page only goes back to DAQmx version 9.0 which is unfortunate. That said, I managed to guess the download link for DAQmx 8.9: http://download.ni.com/support/softlib/multifunction_daq/nidaqmx/8.9/NIDAQ890f1.exe

Thank you very much to all.
@MichaelBalzer I don't know why they have to make it so tricky. Assuming I had seen the compatibility chart link (which I didn't) you would guess that it would be just the table that is displayed on the page.
My Labview version is 7.0 , so it seems I will have to guess the download link for DAQmx 8.1 .
I was able to find the legacy NI-Daq, versions 7.2 to 7.5 here:
http://www.ni.com/gate/gb/GB_INFODAQTRADWNDWS/US
However, at least version 7.4.4 it refuses to install in Windows 7, so it's not possible to check if it can simulate hardware. I tried running the setup in Windows compatibility mode for XP, but it still refused.
That's ok. That is why my National Intruments disks have been sitting on a shelf for over ten years, and after I am done, will go back for hopefully at least ten more years.

As an FYI, before placing the CD into the drive to load that ancient version, check the CD for microfissures at the center hole. I had one explode in my DVD reader, and the shockwave created by it was enough to crash the hard drive! It sounded literally like someone hit the PC with a hammer full force.

@Bilko Will do. Thank you.
Progress report on NI-DAQmx 8.1 . I contacted support and a very friendly rep offered to put the software on the NI ftp download page for 36hrs, and send me a link. Haven't received the download link yet. However while writing this, it occurred to me to try and google "national instruments ftp download", and found my way to this: https://download.ni.com/#support/daq/pc/ni-daq/daqmx/8.1/ I don't know if this has a time limit, or was there all along. There are lots of interesting files there, so I take back some of my negative thoughts regarding NI.
