Why is my LV8 SubVI a clone?

So, is the solution to select the VI, enter its VI properties, de-select reentrant, make your edits, re-select reentrant, save?

No, select
View\Browse Relationship\Reentrant Original
in the Menu. Then an additional copy of the SubVi will open which is not a clone.
Problem is, that this is quite annoying.

With a Reentrant VI you can go to Edit mode (ctrl+m) and you should get the change the original.

Reentrancy doesn't cause slowness.
