Why is my com port missing from my list of VISA devices

Hello all,

I have an Agilent E5810 ethernet to GPIB gateway. I installed Agilent IO library and chose to make Agilent my primary VISA because otherwise the devices on the gateway didn't show up in my VISA device list. Now all of my GPIB devices show up (local and via gateway) but my com port is missing. The com port is actually a USB to serial adapter. It shows up in device manager as CP2101 uart interface COM6. I reloaded NI-VISA but COM6 still oesn't show up. I reloaded Agilent IO and unchecked "make Agelent primary VISA" but that didn't fix it. It is also missing from MAX. I added COM6 ASRL6 but VISA doesn't see it

I think the root of my problem is getting Agilent VISA and NI VISA to work together but why won't my com port show up?

Thanks alot

Hello, how do you do...

Well, I've faced the same problem, you have first to download the NI VISA program to be able to see and choose the correct com of your USB device. ==> refer to http://www.ni.com/visa/

Second, you have to check out your USB device, whether the device is working or not, and you have to setup the driver of your USB device on your computer, so that the computer it self be able to identify your USB device.

I hope this may help you.

regards.

I had already reinstalled NI-VISA 4.2 and windows found my USB serial port and loaded the drivers. The USB/serial interface appears in the device manager as CP2101 UART and COM6 was assigned to the serial port.

Would it help to upgrade to NI-VISA 4.3?

Thanks,
Rob

I really don't know what to tell you, I'm using version 3.2., and my computer identified the USB device as serial communication and appeared in the device manager as com3, and appeared in the labview program as com3 and worked.

Now you have to check out your program.

regards.

It might help if you enabled tulip support in MAX. Open MAX, expand the software listing, click on NI-VISA and in the window on the left, there should be a tab for VISA Options. This is where it is in MAX 4.3 anyway. There should be a General Settings listing. Expand that and select Passports. Check the one called NiVisaTulip.dll. That should make your NI-VISA and Agilent VISA cooperate.

I already enabled the tulip passport but no luck. I have used com ports on this PC before. The com port appeared in the list before I made Agilent the "primary" VISA but I can't undo it for some reason.

I installed VISA 4.3 and it gave a warning that it renamed the Agilent VISA dll

The com6 port is still missing from the VISA list but I can communicate with com6 using MAX.
