Will encrypting my C drive, will programming be affected?

Solved!
Go to solution

I just heard that my management plans on installing some type of encryption software on my main laptop's C: drive.   As this is my primary programming computer for Labview (I also create distributables), I am worried that the encryption will cause major problems with Labview.  Does anyone have experience to tell me that encryption will be ok or if it will prevent/limit Labview functions.

Thank you

Rick

I would imagine that it would depend on how intrusive it is and how it works.

Do you know the probable vendor for the software?

I am using encrypted partitions since a couple of years.  It feels a bit slower compared to a drive without encryption.  With regard to compatibility you can expect no change to the system: Almost everything will continue to work as it did before the encryption process.  Some tools (like resource monitors) might report incorrect or no data if they cannot deal with the according driver.  (That's not that painful.)

My computer has the entire drive encrypted.  I haven't noticed anything as far as performance.  Now the crap the IT puts on the computers is another question.

As of now, I don't know the vendor or name of the encryption software.   Thank you.  From the other posts, it seems that I don't have much to worry about.

We are using TrueCrypt, somewhat the defacto standard nowadays, unless your IT departement insists that software has to have a commercial license. The only thing I notice is the password prompt when starting up the computer.
