cRIO controller will not reset password

Have a cRIO-9063 which has an unknown password set. It is not the default. I did the process of holding down the reset button several times to reboot the controller into user directed safemode with the network adapters reset. The controller does reboot into the correct state, and all the adapters reset and then I can connect to it with a link local IP.

I tried to then format the controller but it still asked for a password to do so.

If you don't have the password you'll have to factory reset the cRIO. It's annoying but you wouldn't want anyone to be able to just walk up to the cRIO and hold down the reset button to bypass needing to know the password.

Are you sure that someone set a password? Try connecting via USB cable. Turn off any VPN. Turn off windows firewall if you can.

Try to follow the recommendations from Quiztus first. The USB connection is not ideal for long term operation as it can be a bit unreliable but to connect up to a controller that-you don’t have the exact settings for, it’s a lot easier than the Ethernet port.

If it is password protected and you don’t know the password, the article that Jacobson linked to won’t help much. Your 9063 is an ARM based controller which is explicitly excluded in that document. You need to create a Service Request at NI support and ask for the recovery.cfg file for your controller. This need to be put on a freshly FAT formatted USB stick not bigger than 8GB and you then need to restart the controller with that USB stick plugged in, by applying power with the reset button pushed in until  the controller status LED comes on.
