dynamically setting picture ring items

the event structure doesn't register mouse down, or mouse up over disabled items ...

I am starting to think scrap the idea of a menu ring; use three Boolean buttons (whose text properties I can easily control) - case closed - a little more real estate but a lot less headaches ...
