I get the following message: Error 1921. Service 'National Instruments LXI Discovery Service' (niLXIDscovery) could not be stopped...
I can't install I/O assistant, VISA, or other instrument drivers until this is solved

Hi Pabsta,
During the installation the NI-VISA automatically discovers compatible LXI instruments or resource that becomes available (using DNS protocols) which LabVIEW and MAX can then control.
Do you have any LXI based equipment installed?

What could happen is during a previous installation or driver upgrade the service was still running or files got corrupted with a different version.
I would try uninstall the last driver installed and then reboot the PC.
If this doesn't solve the problem then I would try to stop the service manually from the registry as shown into this KB link:

Thanks for clearing this up! It has been a few years and I'm trying to become re-acquainted with Labview. I needed to use DAQ assistant, not I/O assistant - as I have a daq board. When I tried to load software drivers for I/O assistant, it locked up because the proper hardware wasn't present.
