Did you mean:

file path from reference

I think you missed the actual problem, which is with TDMS files, not generic file reference.

When using a TDMS file reference, there doesn't seem to be any way to get the file path.

It is not a TDMS file property, can't seem to use a property node.

Even at TDMS Close, there is no path information returned, like there is with the 'regular' File Close.

It doesn't appear that NI has ever addressed this. Do you know if that is the case? Will you get back to us after you "consult your resources"? Smiley Wink

I'm not sure what the problem is but in LabVIEW 8.6.1 on my machine the Refnum to Path function simply returns the path to the file that TDMS refnum refers too. Is there anything more you want?

I'm talking here about the TDMS Open node and friends.

Hah! and... DOH! Obvious in hindsight (why could I not think outside the tdms api? shameful) I missed the answer just previous so I apologize for the snarky reply. Smiley Tongue

Thanks for the good answer.

For future reference this does not appear to work on 8.5.1 - is there an acceptable work-around (perhaps with flattened variant)?

Hah!  I would love to install 8.6.1 (sitting right here!), but NI dropped cFP-20xx support from RT after 8.5.1. Too many field devices deployed and I am leary about maintaining two installs.

PS - NI's official email response (truncated), no joke: "One work around is to upgrades to LabVIEW 2009".

<sigh> So it goes...
