font rendering problem with linux

Hello,

I just updated to KDE4 and xorg X-server 1.5.3. With this update, all fonts in LabVIEW look awful.  No matter which font I choose.

For me it seems like the font rendering doesn't work any more.

I have been trying to fix that for 2 days now, with no success.

Here are some thoughts:

1. switching back to KDE3.5: Same awful fonts

2. .labviewrc settings don't change things

3. since xorg 1.5.3 the freetype-module is not loaded any more while starting X. Does this affect LabVIEW?

(haven't tested that with 1.5.2 yet. SuSE uses 1.5.2, I don't). LabVIEW finds the freetype-libraries in /usr/lib. This I can see from looking at a traced labview run ("strace labview &> LV_trace.txt")

This issue must be related to fontserver or xorg, but I can't solve it...

Any suggestions? Known issues with xorg >1.5.3? I have tried 1.6.3, no difference.

BTW: I know I'm not running one of the standard supported distros. I'm on Gentoo with an older kernel (2.6.22) to keep NIDaqmx running...

Hi bef,

actually the version of  xorg causes the problem. This is a known problem. You can see if it is fixed in a future LabVIEW release if the number 185745 is listed under fixed problems.

Try downgrading to an older version of xorg or use the adobe utopia font.

bef,

I'm using Mandriva 2010.0 KDE 4.3.3. I have been able to achieve decent font rendering through the use of Tahoma fonts and subpixel enabled freetype2, cairo, fontconfig and libxft RPMs.

AndreasS,

I believe LV uses XFree86 and not the current Fontconfig subsystem for font rendering. When will Labview be moved to incorporate the new font rendering? Without the new fontconfig subsystem, the fonts are pretty crappy. This becomes an irritant whenwe deploy our systems at customer locations, and the entire Labview look is not up to par.

Hi,

I don't have this far insight into LabVIEW development. Please leave feedback at the Product Suggestion Center.
