The CLAD exam is based entirely on the contents of the Core 1 and Core 2 course - if you haven't done those courses you may have some gaps in your knowledge for what is required to pass the exam. It may also be that you know how to solve problems in LabVIEW, but your style isn't the 'NI Recommended' way. It also depends on a number of other factors like how much preparation you did for the exam - did you do the sample exams? Did you pass those? DId you go through the exam preparation materials?

Certification is only one way to show you are proficient at LabVIEW - your experience and previous roles/jobs/projects also account for quite a lot. I know many LabVIEW programmers who are good at LabVIEW but have never sat any of the certification exams.

There are many LabVIEW experts on these forums - you could always post some code you have written and maybe they would review it. They would probably be able to give you their impressions of what level you're at.

Edit: The certifications board on the forums is a good place to discuss the certification exams - you can post there if you had any problems with the sample exams or parts of the exam and even have a go a sample CLD exam (which is a practical LabVIEW programming exam) and post your solution there for review.

It's hard to tell you what was wrong with your CLD exam when all we know is you scored something less than a 70.  What points did you miss?  If you tell us that, we can help better.

Edit: You said CLAD.  The CLAD exam is mostly trivia.  Do you remember which areas it said you didn't do well in?  They usually give you a breakdown of the questions.  If we know that, we can probably help you through those a bit.  There's also plenty of CLAD sample exams to start with.  You should get to the point those are easy to take before approaching the CLAD exam.  It helps to know how the test is formed before taking one.

The CLAD basically means you can read, understand, and troubleshoot LabVIEW code.  A CLD basically means you can write decent LabVIEW code in a reasonable amount of time.  But I know a few CLDs I would not claim are good LabVIEW programmers.  But that is another story.

So just having a CLAD or CLD I claim will not say you are "good in LabVIEW".  You will know if you are good based on when you have to update a project you did a year ago.

Certifications get you shots at jobs you oridnarily wouldn't have a chance at getting.  What you do with that shot depends on whether or not you really know your stuff.  And a place that requires certified LabVIEW professionals probably knows their stuff, so it's unlikely you can skate by the interview if you do.

Outside of that, certifications give you a general idea of what level proficiency the developer has.  (Although looking through the forums, I see CLADs and CLDs that could be CLAs.  The reverse is also true, but - fortunately - relatively rare.)

For instance, I recently interviewed a CLAD, so I knew I could cross off many of the questions I had on my list and dig deeper.  (Turns out this person had knowledge pretty equivalent to a CLD, but I'm not the person to decide, so - good luck if you're reading this!)

Looking back at your earlier code can be a little scary.  But it also shows how much you have grown since then.

Actually looking back at old code and not crying is a good sign that you've matured as a LV developer.  It all depends on your definition of "old" of course.
