ni service locator not running

I've read the FAQ regarding this problem but it hasn't helped. I have McAfee running but when i turn it off there's not difference. In fact I even see that NIsvclocator.exe is running but I still can't open any examples due to the above error. Any suggestions?

Hi,

A simple thing to try is to restart the service. You can do this by opening up the Windows Services window by going to Start » Control Panel » Administrative Tools » Services. In the list of services you should see: NI Service Locator. To restart this service, right-click on the entry and select Stop. Wait a minute until the service has stopped and then right-click and select Start. Restart LabVIEW and see if you still get this error.

If you still get the error go to http://localhost:3580/dumpinfo? and post the report you get on this thread so we may b able to better assist you.

I've done that but still no change. When I went to that http://localhost:3580/dumpinfo it was just blank. Not sure what else I can do.

Hi,

Go to Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services >> and see if you can see NI Service locator there. Also check if it is set to start on start up. Also, I am assuming  that you have TCP/IP installed on the machine you are trying this on. The Example Finder and LabVIEW are trying to communicate by way of TCP localhost. (No data is actually sent out over the wire for this communication but the Example Finder will look on-line for web examples for other things.) --- If you do not have TCP installed, try installing it to see if this fixes the problem.

I'm using LabVIEW 8 and I do not see a service called  NI Service Locator.

Any recommendations for installing this service?

I've recently gotten a new computer and installed LV Professional Developer Suite.  Evertyhing seems to be working fine, except when I try to use the Example Finder - I get this same error.

I have tried starting the Service Locator exe from the Startup>>Administrative Tools>>Services - but whenever I click on start it tries to start and then pops up the following error:

"The NI Service Locator service on Local Computer started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they do not have any work to do, for example the Performance Logs and Alerts Service."

I previously also created the shortcut to the exe for the .exe and placed that in my start up folder as suggested by one of the KB articles I read on this subject.

Anything else I can try?

Hi Ryan,

I would like to get a bit more information so that we can troubleshoot further. Which operating system and version of LabVIEW are you using? Do you have any firewall software running? This problem typically occurs due to a firewall permissions issue, but we can definitely dig deeper if necessary to figure out what is going on here.

Windows XP
LV 8.2 (have't done the 8.2.1 upgrade yet)

Looks like Windows Firewall not turned on for this PC.

Since this problem is typically caused by firewall issues, I am not sure at the moment what could be causing your Service Locator process to start and immediately stop. If you are sure that no firewall is currently active and starting the Service Locator process doesn't work (you may want to try starting this process immediately after startup, after LabVIEW startup, etc), I think that uninstalling and reinstalling LabVIEW would be good to try. Out of curiosity, what processor are you using? Have you tried installing your LabVIEW software on another machine?

I hope this helps!
